Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

La-33 (Bogota)
Latin / salsa

Nearing legendary status in their home country of Colombia, and having toured Europe annually for the past seven years, it was only in 2010 that La-33 made their North American debut at the Montreal Jazz Festival. The momentous occasion was met by screaming fans belting out lyrics and ecstatically waving Columbia flags. It was clear to the group that their fame had preceded them and this year they return to our continent ready to enlist new devotees. Brothers Sergio and Santiago Mejia formed the group in 2002 in the capitol city of Bogotá. Since then they have honed their horns, tightened their congas and heated up the dance floor at every stop. Their music is a fiery hot blend of Latin rhythms and buoyant mambo horns. Put on some thin threads and your most comfortable dancing shoes and let La-33 transport you to could nine, street-party style.

Personnel: Sergio Mejia (bass, leader), Santiago Mejia (keys), Guillermo Celis (voice), David Cantillo (voice), Pablo Martinez (voice), Cipriano Rojas (congas), Juan David Fernandez (timbal), Diego Sanchez (bongo), Roland Nieto (trumpet), Juan Felipe Cardenas (saxophone), Jose Miguel Vega (trombone) and Vladimir Romero (trombone).

Salsa PIcante (HFX)
Latin / Afro-Carribean

Salsa Picante has been described by The Chronicle Herald as “Halifax’s number one party band” while successfully walking that tightrope of keeping the audience entertained and maintaining the integ- rity of the music. Since it’s inception in 1991, the sizzingly sounds of the eleven-piece Salsa Picante has been heating up concert and dance halls across the region. The band plays a whole range of Afro-Caribbean music, from traditional rumba to son, merengue, and soca that keeps the dance floor pulsating from start to finish. The members of Salsa Picante are all well respected soloists, freelance and recording artists of the East Coast music scene.

Personnel: Danny Martin (trombone, vocals), Daniel Ruiz (piano, vocal), Dympna Martin (vocal), Paul Vienneau (bass), Tom Roach (timbales) Dan Callis (congas), Silvio Pupo (bongos) Rick Waychesko (trumpet), John Cuming (trumpet), Chris Mitchell (tenor/alto sax)
